Chapter 10

Esme

Around ten that evening, Esme came out of Jack's room, closing the door firmly and making her way back to the living room. Before she came around the corner, she took a deep breath to steady herself. The day had been good, a little challenging at times, but it wasn't every day that a boy was introduced to his father. She doubted that anything was going to be very normal when it came to the situation between the three of them, and she had expected that, but what she hadn't expected was the joy.

It felt, hearing Samir and Jack talk about dinosaurs, watching them joke and play, like a balm that her heart had been craving for some time, perhaps as long as Jack had been alive. It felt as if a piece of her that had been missing had come back, and she didn't know what to do with it.

She had no idea what she would do if it was taken away again.

One day at a time, she told herself. We are going to take this slow, because for important things, you always have to go slow. I tell Jack that all the time, hell, I tell the interns at work. We are going slow, and there is nothing about hearts or missing pieces in going slow, is there?

She came into the living room to see Samir at the big bay window, his back to her as he spoke into the phone. He was speaking Arabic with the lilting Adhia accent that she had always loved so much, and for a moment, she simply enjoyed the sound of it, realizing how much she had missed hearing him speak it.

“—and yes, there's no problem with letting Selim handle that one at all. He can distribute the tasks as necessary, I trust him. Right. Right. I'll speak to you in a few weeks.”

He turned to her with a slight smile.

“Sorry about that, I just wanted to get things taken care of before you came back, but my assistant was a little unclear on the topic of me taking a break.”

“So am I,” Esme said. “I've heard you called the Workman Sheikh, given how much time you spend working and how little time you spend playing.”

“I learned early on that having a sheikh who does nothing but play is not necessarily good for the country,” he said wryly, and she could have kicked herself. His parents were notorious partiers until they had had that fatal car accident, and Esme might have burned up in embarrassment if Samir hadn't given her an impish look.

“How do you know what they call me in the news?” he asked. “Have you been searching for me online?”

She blushed.
